Recreation

Many communities may already have a Parks and Recreation Department offering a variety of active and leisure opportunities. In conducting needs assessments, a community might find lapses in program areas. A certain age or segment of the population might not be having their needs met. Together, Community Education models and Park/Recreation Departments or other recreation agencies can build a partnership to meet the needs of more individuals.

In some cases, communities may not have a Parks and Recreation Department, YMCA, YWCA or other leisure provider. A Community Education model can help to identify and provide leisure opportunities for all ages. Generally, these activities are conducted on school grounds, but may also be housed at local businesses or other agency facilities.

Examples of programs that are offered through some community education models are the following:
•Youth enrichment programs
•Youth sport leagues
•Camps and classes
•Adult sport leagues and classes
•Adult education classes – non-credit and for credit
•Special events
•Wellness activities and classes
•Senior trips
•Youth field trips
•Programs for young children
•Open gyms
• Intramurals
•Recreational trips
•Special summer opportunities

The Iowa Park and Recreation Association and/or the National Recreation and Parks Association are both very useful resources in regards to recreation.
