Financing a Community Education Model

Sources of funding for a community education model are limited only by the creativity of the school and community members. Most often, funding is received from several local sources representing various stakeholders. Numerous funding options are available to the model, including the following:

•School District Funds
-General Fund – the district operating fund may be used for community education.
-Instructional Support Levy – funds from this levy may be designated for community education.
-Educational/Recreational Levy (commonly referred to as the 13 _ cent levy) – funds from this levy may be used only for community education or recreational purposes. This levy requires voter approval.
•Other public agencies
-Community Parks Department – a partnership may be formed with the local parks and recreation department for funds and/or in-kind services.
-Other public agencies – partnerships may be formed with other public entities, i.e. community colleges, to provide funding and/or in-kind services.
•Non-public agencies – partnerships may be formed with local agencies, i.e. colleges or hospitals, to provide funding and/or in-kind services.
•Fees
-Tuition for classes/sessions offered.
-Impose a fee for facility usage by non-school groups.
•Other
-Apply for available grants, both publicly and privately funded.
-The Advisory Council may undertake fund raising efforts.
